Anti-aging is a popular phrase, but many people fail to understand what it entails. In a nutshell, it’s all about putting the brakes on premature aging and illness. Our goal at Juvenon is to add 5 quality years of health to 1,000,000 people’s lives. To that end, we took a look at what makes people sick.
Based on a landmark study, researchers at Harvard University published a comprehensive report, The Preventable Causes of Death in the United States: Comparative Risk Assessment of Dietary, Lifestyle, and Metabolic Risk Factors.
Here’s what the respected Harvard researchers found. First, don’t smoke, or if you do, quit smoking. But everyone knows that! But surprisingly, grouped together, the largest risk factors are called “metabolic syndrome.” These are highlighted in the table below, and make up 46% of the preventable deaths or 914,000 deaths per year. About twice the number deaths caused by smoking!
Annual U.S. Preventable Deaths by Risk Factor
|High blood pressure||395,000|
|Overweight–obesity (high BMI)||216,000|
|High blood glucose||190,000|
|High LDL cholesterol||113,000|
|High dietary salt (sodium)||102,000|
|Low dietary omega-3 fatty acids (seafood)||84,000|
|High dietary trans fatty acids||82,000|
|Low intake of fruits and vegetables||58,000|
|Low dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)||15,000|
|Total of metabolic risk factors for chronic disease||914,000|
|Metabolic risk factors as a percent of total||46%|
To clarify, metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels — that occur together. Importantly, metabolic syndrome increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
Metabolic syndrome is closely linked with aging. According to a study in the May 19, 2015 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, 50 percent of American adults 60 years age or older were estimated to have metabolic syndrome
A hallmark of metabolic syndrome is an aged and poorly functioning energy metabolism. At Juvenon we are passionate about energy metabolism. By helping to rejuvenate your energy metabolism, we hope to reduce the potential impact of metabolic syndrome, and add years of quality to your life.
