Gives People a Mental and Physical Edge Starting at Age 30

Incline Village, NV, June 25, 2007 – If juggling a job, the kids and family has left you feeling haggard beyond your years, Juvenon™ is the second pair of hands you’ve been looking for. Discovered by an award-winning team of scientists at University of California, Berkeley, the dietary supplement helps slow the aging of cells by combining a natural, energy-boosting component (acetyl L-carnitine) with a powerful anti-oxidant (alpha lipoic acid). Juvenon is a patented cellular dietary supplement that helps persons 30 years and older to recharge their cellular batteries and help sustain energy levels.

Juvenon is attracting the attention of scientists worldwide. “Maintaining cellular health is a central component of healthy aging, and Juvenon is a remarkable supplement that can enhance life during the process of growing older,” says Dr. Andrew Weil, a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine. Integrative medicine believes prevention, lifestyle factors and mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of life are essential to treat human illness.

"The research performed at Berkeley offers compelling evidence of a significant discovery in promoting cellular health, and healthy cells are the key to a whole range of benefits for your brain and body. I take Juvenon daily and recommend it as part of a healthy lifestyle," said Weil.

Research found that a central factor in aging is the decay of the mitochondria — the organelles within the cell that convert amino acids, fatty acids and sugars into energy.  This decay begins as a person reaches their late 20s and early 30s. As people age, mitochondria efficiency diminishes, as does their quantity per cell. The effect is a body operating at one-half to one-fourth the energy it had at youth. Since the brain consumes more energy than other organs, it typically is the most affected by aging. An energy deficit in the brain and central nervous system may affect the activities of all organs throughout the body as well as mental acuity and mood.

For persons looking to maintain energy throughout the day, Juvenon helps. The ingredients in the product are based on substances that the body normally manufactures naturally at sufficient levels during youth, but in lower quantities as we age.

Juvenon was co-founded by Dr. Bruce Ames, a U.S. National Medal of Science award-winning researcher and his team at Berkeley. Specializing in cellular science for over 50 years, he’s considered an international leader in the field of mutagenesis and genetic toxicology. His work has had a major impact on basic and applied research on mutation, cancer, and aging. The development of the “Ames Test” became the world’s most widely used and respected method, utilized in over 3,000 laboratories and by all major drug and chemical companies, to identify potential carcinogens.

Years of observing cellular chaos wreaked by cancer led Dr. Ames to an association between the rise in cancer incidence and the increase of free radicals – molecular misfits that create havoc inside cells by stripping other molecules of their electrons. Too many free radicals stiffen cell membranes, wear down enzymes and result in cell mutations that can lead to cancer.

In the mid-1990s, he came up with an idea to help slow the cellular aging process. A dietary supplement called acetyl-L-carnitine, a naturally occurring biochemical that helps transport fatty acids into the cells and produce energy, was sweeping the country as the latest pick-me-up.

Back in his lab in California, Ames experimented with acetyl-L-carnitine in older rats and within weeks they were reenergized and their biochemistry was running more smoothly. But acetyl-L-carnitine also increased the level of free radicals, so Ames added lipoic acid, with astounding results.

“Their brains looked better; they were full of energy and looked younger. They also made vast strides in cognition and memory tests,” said Ames.

Ames translated his research on acetyl-L-carnitine and lipoic acid into Juvenon. In 1999, he and colleague Dr. Tory Hagen, now a professor at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, founded the company to sell the energy formula as a dietary supplement. Juvenon combines the two supplements into one pill to ensure the correct dosage.  The patented composition of mitochondrial metabolites has been shown in laboratory experiments to support mitochondrial function as cells age by maintaining the membrane potential, promoting metabolism and cell function and enhancing anti-oxidative protection.

Dr. Tory Hagen is co-inventor with Dr. Ames on the patent that Juvenon has licensed from the University of California, Berkeley, and co-author with Dr. Ames of Mitochondrial Decay in Aging and its Consequences to the Cell. Dr. Hagen is Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and Principal Investigator at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. Previously, Dr. Hagen was a Post-doctoral Fellow and Assistant Specialist Research Scientist in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry at Emory University.

The Juvenon scientific advisory board includes some of the world’s leading experts, including Dr. M. Flint Beal, professor and chairman of the department of neurology and neuroscience at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Neurologist-in-Chief at the New York Cornell campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital. Previously, he was professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and chief of the neurochemistry laboratory and director of the clinical trials unit in the department of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Fr. Ervin Epstein, Jr., is a leading dermatologist whose research interests have focused on the molecular biology of inherited and neoplastic skin diseases. Dr. Epstein is also a frequent speaker and leading writer with papers that have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine and Science. He has also served on the boards of numerous dermatological organizations as well as journals, including American Academy of Dermatology and Journal of Investigative Dermatology. He has served as President of the Society for Investigative Dermatology, the world’s foremost organization devoted to skin biology research. Currently, Dr. Epstein serves as the Research Dermatologist and Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, and has an active private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dr. Benjamin Treadwell, Ph.D., is an independent researcher in biochemistry with a life-long interest in metabolism and aging. He previously served as an Associate Professor of biochemistry at Harvard Medical School and as Director of the Orthopedic Research Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry at New York University and served as a Research Fellow at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in New Jersey. His goal is to develop a combination of compounds, or compound cocktail, packaged in a tablet form that when taken on a regular basis by humans will result in significant improvement in overall health and quality of life.
